About Natasha

“I have heard much singer-songwriter material in my day, and I rarely hear something that I feel is truly worthy of the world’s ear. I think Natasha is an exception.”

–Jack Lavin, JUNO Award-winning songwriter

Current Work

Los Angeles native Natasha Wood has been called a “Brazilian Joni Mitchell” and has been compared to Marisa Monte, Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Esperanza Spalding, Ani DiFranco, and Carole King. Her debut solo album, “Part of Me,” showcases her incredible talent as both a striking vocalist and wildly talented songwriter. With lavish arrangements and skilled production, Wood’s high-spirited debut album absolutely obliterates the boundaries between musical genres.

Natasha has performed throughout Los Angeles, appearing on stages including the world famous The Viper Room, in addition to Genghis Cohen, Westwood Music Center, Jumpcut Café, Beverly Hills ArtSHOW, The Other Door, and Café Cordiale. In addition, she has been featured on L.A. Talk Radio’s “Indies in Motion” and has performed at numerous venues throughout the South Pacific Islands.

Early Musical Training and Inspiration

Natasha has been creating music ever since her parents gave her a toy piano on her 3rd birthday. As a child in Los Angeles, she spent countless days visiting the West LA recording studio that belonged to her grandfather, record producer and founder of Dot Records, Randy Wood. Coming from a musically inclined Brazilian family on her mom’s side, Natasha grew up with the sounds of samba, bossa nova, and MPB pulsing through the household, along with those of 70s singer-songwriters, Broadway musicals, and old school R&B.

Natasha studied classical piano for fifteen years and found herself drawn to lush impressionist harmonies and ragtime, which culminated in a fascination with jazz and composition. An avid writer of poetry and fiction, she kept vivid journals of her world travels, and after a life-changing trip to South America at age 19, she picked up the guitar and began playing and singing Brazilian music. Her original song, “Fennecus,” which was written for a final class project while studying jazz theory under Tom Ranier at UCLA, would define a new direction in her songwriting. The songs that ensued were a unique blend of samba, bossa nova, jazz, folk, and world music styles that told stories through eloquent lyrics.

And About the Animals…

Natasha’s love of music is matched only by her love for animals, which led her to a career in veterinary medicine. While attending veterinary school at Tufts University, the original songs continued to flow, some inspired by her unique emotional experiences working with homeless and injured animals. In Natasha’s words, “Songs are often written about one type of love – romantic love – and overlook the love we share with the many creatures around us, our family and friends, the places we visit, and the adventures we embark on during our lifetime.”
